You! Look at all you people out here nodding! While soon there's gonna be a lot of bombing, we grieveTrump!? That guy just gives the pot a stirring motionI haven't seen such terrible emotions since New Year's Eve.
Maybe they, maybe they walk over next to me when I'm speaking. Maybe they see me speaking and it gives them an idea. Maybe they could, well, not quite speak, but maybe they could just stand next to me, and, well, they could... Yeah, they're just nodding their head, the person came up next to me, and they're not saying anything, but they're nodding their head. They look like they're agreeing. They're expressing some kind of support. It makes me a little less afraid to speak now. And there's someone, I can see someone off in the distance, and they, they, they're kind of, almost, it looks like they're laughing at me, and I feel scared again, I feel like maybe I shouldn't be speaking. Someone over there is taking notes. Someone over there is filming me, pointing a camera, and I don't know what's going to happen next.
That doesn't seem it make it any less true, what you're saying, and so you go on and you say it, you just, you just, you have to speak truth, because, what are you here for? And, to encourage others to know that they can accept and speak truth. And you say it, you say it passionately, but you say it with a gentleness that recognizes that what is your truth might not be everyone else's truth. You say it from your heart, as you intend for your truth to be beneficial to most people. You're able to feel, still, still carefully a judgment when you noticed that somebody is very obviously not speaking truth. You can be compassionate, and realize all the reasons why they aren't speaking truth. You can realize that somewhere along the chain, they, too, are afraid.
Even if they're way up at the top, and they're exploiting the most power, even if they're very self-aware of this whole process - why wouldn't they be? There are entire books on the subject, seminars, teaching, entire courseworks, films... It's no secret how power operates. It's not a secret. It's one of those things that's sometimes just like a truth that you might be afraid to speak about, but everybody knows. And, still, you can find compassion for the people who are taking advantage of their positions of power, while also still continuing to feel judgment that that abuse of power, for whatever reason it's going on, even as you can find your heart about it, and you can imagine the heart that those people are trying to come from...

I've always been lousy at managing BWY's social media presence, so my intent in starting the SHORTS project was to give myself something fun to do, while 'posting engaging content' and 'engaging with my audience' and the other buzzwordy things I knew I was supposed to be doing. The thoroughly remixed and mastered versions have been released in 10 song increments since that time, titled SHORTS, VOL. 1-5.At the beginning of the project - before I thought it WAS a project - I wrote these short songs (sometimes extemporaneously) and filmed myself recording them, then posted the videos on our Instagram and Facebook pages. To begin with, both the songs and videos were done very loosely and I was just having fun. But as things often go I quickly began to take the whole thing rather too seriously and by the time I reached the material that ultimately became SHORTS, VOL. 5, the songs were full-fledged pop productions, which weren't even particularly short. As much as the project (and the world) changed over the course of those 15 months from mid 2019 through late 2020, a few things stayed the same. I kept the tradition of filming my vocal takes all the way to the 5oth and final song, even as the songs got longer and ever more complicated, and filming one-take vocals became a more Sisyphean effort. The songs on SHORTS, VOL. 5 were written and recorded from May to October 2020. The original versions of the songs along with the music videos can be found on our IG/FB pages. The songs included on this album have been extensively remixed and remastered, so hopefully they will do ya fine. Story time...In June 2020, I noticed all at once that I had lost around 30 pounds over the course of a month. I know a lot of people might dream of that kind of transformation, but unless you are working at losing weight, it isn't a good sign. One day I was feeling strange, and when I took my temperature, it was around 95 degrees. My doctor took some bloodwork and saw that my pancreatic numbers were outrageous and suggested an ultrasound. They found what looked like a tumor on my pancreas and an MRI was ordered. The second song on this album, MR. I (to be read as "Mister I") was written and recorded on the day of that MRI, when I was honestly the most terrified I've ever been. A few weeks later, I got hopeful news that it looked the tumor was a cyst, and on that day I wrote and recorded the song CAUSE FOR HOPE. In the end, it turned out that the whole pancreatic cancer scare was just a scare, and for that and many other blessings, I say thank ya. Of all the 500-something songs I've written in my life, I might be proudest of MR. I. Not because it's particularly complicated or beautiful, or that my performance was particularly good. But I'm proud that on a day when I was absolutely terrified, had reason to believe I was going to be given a few months to live, and had no real reason to hope for good news, I wrote something that is full of love and light and joy. I hope that in all my darkest moments, I can be half so brave. Okay, enough of story time. I'll let you get to listening, if that will do ya fine. Thank you for taking this journey with me and I sincerely hope you enjoy SHORTS, VOL. 5 - Scott J Butler (The Black and White Years) $(".tralbum-about").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_about"), "more", "less"); credits released February 14, 2022 Music, Lyrics, Produced by Scott J ButlerAdditional Vocals on SUN AND MOON and TO LOVE by Adrienne R Butler $(".tralbum-credits").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_long"), "more", "less"); license all rights reserved tags Tags alternative electronic alt pop indie Austin Shopping cart subtotal USD taxes calculated at checkout Check out about THE BLACK AND WHITE YEARS Austin, Texas
